Did you know that after they switched to blind auditions, major symphony orchestras hired women between 30% to 55% more? Before bringing in “blind auditions” with a screen to conceal the the candidate, women in the top 5 major orchestras made up less than 5% of the musicians performing.so I believe it was actually more complicated than that, in interesting ways. Because at first, when they did blind auditions, they were STILL hiring more men.
…Then they put down a carpet, so that high heels didn’t clack on the floor, and BOOM women were suddenly getting hired.
The testers didn’t even know that’s what they were picking up on, which just goes to show how tiny of a cue it takes for misogyny to kick in.
The case of blind auditions for orchestras and how it dramatically changed the gender makeup of orchestras is a very illuminating example of gender bias, and an interesting possible way of countering it.
You can be sexist without knowing it. You can be racist without knowing it. This is not a moral failing; it is a moral imperative to remember that you are fallible, and take steps to limit the damage your squishy ape brain’s foibles can cause.

Would you look at this masterpiece
Via @alexrybakofficial on TikTok
For context:
The violinist is Alexander Rybak, a Belorussian violinist whose family defected from the USSR to Norway. One of the songs he’s mashing up is his own “Fairytale”, Norway’s entry that won the 2009 Eurovision.
The other song, which is the one playing on the amp, is “Stefania” by the Kalush Orchestra, Ukraine’s entry that won the 2022 Eurovision. The song is about the writer’s own mother, and also about mothers who protect their children from war. Once Russia invaded, the song became a war anthem.
So this isn’t just a gorgeous piece of music. It’s a political piece about unity between people who have been oppressed by the same empire.

HEY if anyone and everyone wants to reply to this with your favorite soup and soup adjacent recipes I’m making a soup bucket list to pretend like cold weather doesn’t make me feel like Radiohead’s how to disappear completely and fall into a fugue
🍲🍜❣️🍁🍜🍲🍲🍜🍜🍲🍜🍲🍜🍲🍜🥣🍜🍲🥣🍜🍲🍜🥣🍜🥣🍲🥣🍂🍁🍂🍁🍁🤧❄️😰🌧🧦🥪
THE SOUP BUCKET LIST (compiled here w/ links and notes. Thanks to all who replied, looking forward to your recipes!! I’m going to aim for at least one a week. Asterisks denote slow cooker):
Meat/Seafood containing:
*Creamy Tortellini/Spinach/Chicken soup (easily vegetarian, sub chicken for white beans?) this was banned from posting on r/slowcooking for a long time when i frequented the sub (as much as one can frequent a crockpot subreddit i guess lol) because people were so obsessed. i made this circa 2019 and am eager to revisit. vegetarianize by swapping white beans for the chicken.
*Stuffed Pepper slow cooker soup this is one of my favorites, I often swap out sausage/beef for black beans
*Salmon/potato chowder— I don’t remember if this is the recipe I used before, but basically any chowder recipe with some frozen salmon, potatoes, and canned corn will do. I will probably increase the herbs and spices.
Zuppa toscana (this is on the list solely from that comic that circulates on here— recipe is included in op’s reblog)
*Enchilada Verde soup: I’ll probably add a bunch of hot sauce or extra peppers to this lmao I don’t really trust it as is. Apparently this is keto but I will be adding tortilla strips also.
Doenjang jigae I don’t like clams slash I’m not made of money so I will be making this vegetarian apart from the dried anchovies
Toast Soup (yeah…idk either) I saved this on pinterest ages ago bc I’m a person who is curious and a little obsessed with trying outrageous recipes and forgot about it until I searched my boards for ‘soup’ for this list.
Slow cooker split pea soup— thanks @elicash for the suggestion, I’ve never had this soup though it’s been on my radar for years.
Vegetarian or easily made vegetarian (or see green text above):
Mike Breakingbad Soup (loaded potato) (omit bacon) @msculper also mentioned what sounded like a very similar soup with the addition of kale, which sounds awesome, I love adding kale to soups because it holds up very well and stays robust for many days and reheatings
Brie, Apple, And Cheddar Beer Soup idk
Okroshka— a summer soup @interimsliebenden suggested for the list!! This is a chilled cucumber soup, so I’ll make it on one of those unpredictable warm days that makes me uneasy about climate change. I’ll easily be able to get the kvass he mentioned in the replies at an import store a few neighborhoods over but there’s a kefir based version in the link as well in case anyone wants to try that version. Also lmk if the recipe I found is way off base for what you had in mind lol
Scandinavian cabbage soup suggested by @localpubliclibrary: sub veggie broth for the chicken broth if you’re vegetarian :-)
Vegan/easy to turn vegan
Butternut squash bisque was a clear favorite among the replies— @musicforfilms and @msculper both mentioned it. I haven’t needed a recipe for this in years, so I’ll just copy the reply from @localpubliclibrary: “Love a butternut squash soup, chunks of squash with onion and garlic cloves and chili and a good amount of powdered ginger and a tiny bit of soy sauce, cooked in chicken broth then all blended up with an immersion blender 🍲. Also works pretty well with acorn squash”
EDIT: the link to butternut squash apple soup is here!
Three Sisters Soup courtesy of @muirneach: “i also really love this three sisters soup my art teacher taught me. get a squash roast it blender it the night before. then just chop up some onions with some oil then add some water, green beans and white kidney beans, some stock, the squash stuff, some corn, and peas and carrots. i also like to add some of that frozen spinach. go ham with whatever spices and herbs you want”
Yewande Komolafe’s peanut and pumpkin soup (use vegan yogurt)
Turkish potato/red lentil soup w/ the link @kaijudick suggested!
Ina Garten’s Roasted Tomato Basil soup (sub veggie broth, earth balance)
Kanuchi (Cherokee nut soup, found by searching “soup” on seriouseats lol)
*Panera autumn squash soup copycat— might be similar to the butternut squash bisque but i got this soup on my only visit to Panera within memory and I remember it being really good even though it was 2015 but i imagine it still holds up
African peanut stew— I didn’t have a recipe in mind, so thanks @elicash for linking this one :-)
Salmorejo— Spanish chilled soup that blends up tomatoes with old bread, I’ve been meaning to make it since this summer…oops. I will be adding hard boiled eggs to mine but obviously if you’re vegan don’t do that.
Jones also linked this soup post with a few more recipes :-) also, I decided not to add dals to this list because I already cook them so often they aren’t going on my personal soup bucket list (highly suggest a classic red lentil dal and a dal makhani if you’ve never had it) happy northern hemisphere soup season everyone :-)

There is an old belief in Serbian villages and small towns that certain pumpkins (and watermelons), when left outside during a full moon, will turn in to a vampire.
Happy Halloween, everyone!

This is the quality fall shit I’m here for
I think it’s great that Pumpkins (and other squash) were only introduced to Europe around 1600 and the Serbs wasted absolutely no time blaming them for their problems.

being an older sibling is like. you’ve never known a life without me. mom yelled at me and it taught her she never wanted to yell at you. I painted my room purple and grey and then you did too. we live in the same house but I haven’t spoken to you in months. I don’t know your favorite color. I saw it was going to rain so I picked you up from school on my way home so your books wouldn’t get wet. i was so worried when you woke up sick when you were three. you don’t remember being sick. mom and dad made their worst mistakes with me and I’m glad they didn’t make them with you. I’m doing everything for the first time so you won’t be in the dark. I don’t know any of your friend’s names anymore. I used to know them all. if something happens to mom and dad you won’t have to worry because everything will fall to me. you don’t like to be home alone but even if you don’t see me just knowing I’m there makes you feel better. at least that’s what mom told me. you still give me jars to open for you because you can’t quite get them. I only see you during dinner. i’d never even think about missing one of your concerts. I stand at the counter when I eat and now you do, too. when offered a selection of books you picked the same one I did when i was your age. I’m terrified you compare yourself to me. I love you. I don’t know if you like me. I want you to. mom says dinner’s ready
